With the team performing poorly on the pitch and this rearranged game played on the same night that the European Cup-Winners' Cup final between Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund was shown live on television this dead rubber was almost certainly going to draw a poor attendance. Unseasonably poor weather exacerbated the situation and a meagre 4,554 fans turned up - the lowest ever attendance for a first team game at Highbury.

The record for most programmes sold at a home game had been set earlier in the season against Manchester United, this game saw the opposite with the fewest programmes sold.

It also proved to be the final nail in the coffin for Billy Wright's four year tenure as Arsenal manager, and he was sacked during the summer.
