{"id":35525,"date":"2015-08-04T10:00:06","date_gmt":"2015-08-04T09:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/old.thearsenalhistory.com\/?p=10713"},"modified":"2026-03-21T09:51:22","modified_gmt":"2026-03-21T09:51:22","slug":"historical-plumstead-arsenal-landmarks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thearsenalcollection.org.uk\/?p=35525","title":{"rendered":"Historical Plumstead Arsenal Landmarks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Plumstead and Woolwich Trip: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A few years back on 6th August 2013 Andy and myself went on a\u00a0tour around the areas where The Arsenal FC foundation occurred in Plumstead and Woolwich.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10725\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10725\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10725 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thearsenalcollection.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Invicta-terracing-Hector-Str-1.jpg?resize=500%2C505&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Invicta terracing Hector Str 1\" width=\"500\" height=\"505\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10725\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Invicta terracing in the 1970s<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We\u00a0set off from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalgreenwich.gov.uk\/heritagecentre\/site\/index.php\">Greenwich Heritage Centre <\/a>after a little bit of research into the Sportsman Ground and the 1876 Plumstead Common enclosure revolt.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10745\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10745\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10745 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thearsenalcollection.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Greenwich-Heritage-Centre.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Greenwich Heritage Centre\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10745\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Greenwich Heritage Centre<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As I had knowledge of the area it, I had planned a circuitous route which would take in many of the sites and we jumped into my trusty Astra.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">First up was the <strong>Lord Raglan Pub<\/strong>: 158 Burrage Road, SE18 9BL. This is important as it was where the original first year records and minutes were destroyed by the club\u2019s first centre back Richard Price while engaged in drunken revelry.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10746\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10746\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10746 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thearsenalcollection.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/The-Lord-Raglan-Pub.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"The Lord Raglan Pub\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10746\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Lord Raglan Pub<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just up the road is the <strong>Prince of Wales Pub<\/strong>,\u00a0111 Plumstead Common Road, SE18\u00a03AU \u2013 Now, sadly, has been turned into a hostel. It was at this pub that Dial Square Cricket Club formed a football section\u00a0in October 1886. Outside the pub is a plaque with accurate information about the pub\u2019s seminal role in the formation of The Arsenal.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10747\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10747\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10747 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thearsenalcollection.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Prince-of-Wales.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Prince of Wales\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10747\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prince of Wales<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Plumstead Common Cricket pitch<\/strong> is just to the back of the Prince of Wales, difficult to see now as the common has been landscaped and had trees planted where they used to play.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10748\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10748\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10748 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thearsenalcollection.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Plumstead-Common-Cricket-Pitch.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Plumstead Common Cricket Pitch\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10748\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plumstead Common &#8211; used to be Cricket Pitch<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Turning left into Plumstead Common Road after a few hundred yards we came across the first dressing room: <strong>The Star<\/strong>\u00a0in Jago Road. Since 1887 this has been\u00a0externally rebuilt but at least it is in the same location as then and has the same name.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10749\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10749\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10749 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thearsenalcollection.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/The-Star-Pub.jpg?resize=500%2C376&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"The Star Pub\" width=\"500\" height=\"376\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10749\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Star Pub<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A couple of deft left turns and we arrived at the <strong>Plumstead Common Football pitch<\/strong> \u2013 where Royal Arsenal first played January 1887. It is bordered by Waverley Crescent and Heavitree Close. It is very easy to walk there from the cricket pitch, and the original pitch is now partly covered by tennis courts and a bowling green.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10750\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10750\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10750 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thearsenalcollection.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Plumstead-Common-Football-Pitch.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Plumstead Common Football Pitch\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10750\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plumstead Common &#8211; Football Pitch in 1887<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Further up Plumstead Common Road to the right is the <strong>Who\u2019d A Thought It<\/strong> pub \u2013 7 Timbercroft Lane, Plumstead, SE18 2SB. Owned by 1910 Arsenal Chairman Jock Craib, a tall whisky drinking well known landlord during the Woolwich Arsenal FC period. This used to be my local as I lived in Tuam Road while writing \u201cThe Crowd at Woolwich Arsenal FC\u201d in its original format. Please note the authentic throwback 1990-91 shirt which I can just about still fit into [I still can &#8211; MA2015].<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10751\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10751\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10751 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thearsenalcollection.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/The-Whod-a-Thought-it-pub-1.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"The Who'd a Thought it pub\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10751\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Who&#8217;d a Thought it pub<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Next is a journey down the steep hill down Lakedale Road and into Conway Street to the <strong>Invicta Ground<\/strong> \u2013 where you can still see the terracing in gardens of Hector\u00a0Street at the intersection of Mineral Street. Andy and myself were very lucky to knock on the door of a Mrs Patel, lovely Arsenal fan, who let us into the garden and we were able to stand on the terraces where our Arsenal predecessors had stood over 120 years ago. They will be visited on our next trip.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Green Man pub<\/strong>, (now O\u2019Dowds), 65-67 Plumstead High Street SE18 1SB<\/li>\n<li><strong>Weavers Mineral Water Co<\/strong>, 80 Plumstead High Street, virtually opposite Green Man<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lord Derby<\/strong> \u2013 89 Walmer Terrace.\u00a0SE18 7DZ. \u00a0Club HQ 1893, and fan favourite. Landlord was a shareholder<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plumstead Radical Club<\/strong> \u2013 83-88 Walmer Terrace, next to Lord Derby<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We passed by the above sites on Plumstead High Street and Plumstead Road and made our way via the fiendishly difficult road system, but eventually got to Griffin Manor Way, now a side road to the main highway. Here came our first shock. The <strong>Sportsman Ground<\/strong> is now a Prison next to Belmarsh called HMP Thameside Prison run by Serco. [Which at the time was a great irony as one of us worked for the prison service, and one of us for Serco &#8211; MA2015]<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10754\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10754\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10754 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thearsenalcollection.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Sportsman-Location-New-building-far-in-distance.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Sportsman Location - New building far in distance\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10754\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sportsman Location &#8211; New building far in distance<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is just up from where the <strong>Manor Ground<\/strong>\u00a0used to be which is now a warehouse off Griffin Way and bounded by Nathan Way and Hadden Road.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10755\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10755\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10755 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thearsenalcollection.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Manor-Ground-Location.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Manor Ground Location\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10755\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Manor Ground Location<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Both these are best seen from the Southern Outfall Sewer pipe, which is accessed via Nathan Way. In the day this cost the club much revenue as people could watch for free from this high vantage point, it being a massive covered earth mound miles in length and at no point is it open.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10756\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10756\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10756 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thearsenalcollection.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Sewer-Outfall-to-Abbey-Wood.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Sewer Outfall to Abbey Wood\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10756\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sewer Outfall to Abbey Wood<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After these fairly full site visits we made our way to the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DialArch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Dial Arch Pub<\/strong><\/a>, Number 1 Street, The Warren, Royal Arsenal Riverside, Woolwich, London, SE18 6GH. This is part of the converted Dial Square building. There is a lot of Arsenal information on boards outside here, most of which are factually incorrect in many places and a real missed opportunity. [Note. It was here the club renamed itself Royal Arsenal FC on or around the 12 December.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10760\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10760\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10760 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thearsenalcollection.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Crest-on-Beresford-Gate.jpg?resize=500%2C419&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Crest on Beresford Gate\" width=\"500\" height=\"419\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10760\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crest on Beresford Gate<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We walked past the Beresford Gates, originally the main gates to the Royal Arsenal ordnance factory and only a few yards from the Dial Square workshops.
